El Dorado International Airport is an international airport serving the Colombian capital Bogot\u00e1 and the surrounding areas. The airport is mostly located in the Fontib\u00f3n district of Bogot\u00e1, but extends partially to the Engativ\u00e1 region and the municipality of Funza in the Western Savanna Province of the Cundinamarca Department. The port handles more than 35 million passengers and 740,000 metric tons of cargo, making it the second busiest airport in South America in terms of passenger traffic and the busiest in terms of cargo traffic. El Dorado is also by far the busiest and most important airport in Colombia, accounting for just under half (49%) of the country’s air traffic and the vast majority of private jet<\/a> flights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El Dorado is a hub for Colombian flag carrier Avianca and its subsidiaries Avianca<\/a> Express and Avianca Cargo, LATAM Colombia, Satena, Wingo and several other cargo airlines. The airport is owned by the Colombian Government and operated by Operadora Aeroportuaria Internacional (OPAIN), a consortium of Colombian construction and engineering firms, and Flughafen Z\u00fcrich AG, the Swiss company that operates Zurich Airport. The airport was named the best airport in South America by the World Airport Awards. El Dorado has been certified four stars by Skytrax and its staff has been rated the best in South America by Skytrax, as well as being ranked 35th on Skytrax’s list of the World’s 100 Best Airports in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

History of El Dorado Airport<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The El Dorado passenger terminal was designed to replace Techo Airport during the military regime of General Gustavo Rojas Pinilla. Its construction began in 1955 and it was inaugurated at the end of 1959 along with the other facilities of the then new airport. On December 10, 1959, Eldorado International Airport was inaugurated with a spectacular aviation exhibition that began on December 6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1990, the main offices of the Administrative Department of Civil Aviation, a government agency that replaced the now defunct Colombian Aviation Company, began operating on the third floor of the terminal building. The Center for Aviation Studies was also built during this year. Likewise, the National Aviation Center was built on central plots of land in the eastern part of the airport site. In 1998, the airport’s second runway was inaugurated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the end of 2017, all the works of El Dorado International Airport were fully completed. The airport’s passenger terminal increased from 173,000 m\u00b2 to 235,000 m\u00b2 and has the potential to serve 43,000,000 people a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, which led to national quarantine and air transport restrictions in 2020, El Dorado International Airport temporarily suspended international and domestic commercial flights, except humanitarian flights, until September 1, 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
