Ministro Pistarini International Airport, also known as Ezeiza Airport, is an international airport located 22 kilometers south-southwest of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. Covering 3,475 hectares, it is one of the two commercial airports serving Buenos Aires and the metropolitan area, along with Aeroparque Jorge Newbery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pistarini Airport is the country’s largest international airport by number of passengers handled and is a hub for international flights of Aerol\u00edneas Argentinas, which also operates domestic flights from the airport. Buenos Aires Airport History<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The airport is named after Juan Pistarini, Minister of Public Works during the presidency of Juan Per\u00f3n, who laid the cornerstone of the project on December 22, 1945. The airport was designed and built by Argentine technicians. Its construction, which took four years to complete, was one of the most important projects in the five-year plan of Juan Per\u00f3n’s first presidency. The airport opened on April 30, 1949. When it opened, it was the third largest airport in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 28 September 1998, the airport was taken over by Aeropuertos Argentina 2000 as part of the privatization of the National Airport System. In 1998 the local subsidiary of ADB (now a Siemens AG company) installed an individual light control and monitoring system. It was then responsible for the renovation of the two main runways 11\/29 and 17\/35. As of December 2002, both runways were re-categorized as CAT IIIa by ICAO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2005, the port was named the best airport in South America at the 12th World Travel Awards in London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In September 2009, construction began on “Ezeiza 2009”, designed by the MSGSSS studio. In the first phase of the project, warehouses and the old cargo terminal were demolished to make room for Aerol\u00edneas Argentinas’ cabotage and international sector of the new Terminal C, which will be operational in October 2010, when Aeroparque Jorge Newbery is closed for maintenance work.
