History of Saint Etienne Loire Airport<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The airport was established in 1962 on the site of the former Bouth\u00e9on airport. In 1978, a new terminal building was built to accommodate passengers. In July 1997, Proteus Airlines made the airport its hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2007, there were no airlines operating regular flights to Saint Etienne Airport, after airlines stopped flying to the airport for various reasons from the beginning of the 2000s. In the wake of the downturn, towards the end of 2007 the port management decided to appoint a new director and radically change the strategy. This resulted in a two-year agreement with Lyon-Saint-Exup\u00e9ry airport and the development of an intensive commercial strategy focussing on some previously untapped markets (charter, leisure, etc.) and flights by companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2009, Ryanair returned with four low-cost flights a week to Porto. In 2010 the airport regained a level of activity it had not had for five years. In June, a second low-cost carrier, Pegasus Airlines, started operating four flights a week to Istanbul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In April 2013, Saint-\u00c9tienne Airport authorities set up a joint union for the management of the airport, which was formally established on 4 April 2013 and is composed of Saint-\u00c9tienne M\u00e9tropole, the Loire Forez agglomeration community, the Pays de Saint-Galmier municipalities community, the Loire General Council and the Saint-\u00c9tienne\/Montbrison Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The first decision taken by this union was to change the name of the airport from “Saint-\u00c9tienne – Bouth\u00e9on” to “Saint-\u00c9tienne – Loire”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the change of management, business was steady between 2013 and 2017, but in October 2017, Ryanair and Pegasus<\/a> operated their last commercial flights and the port suffered a significant loss of passengers. Following the decline in operations at the port, the airport was reserved only for private flights. As a result of the problems experienced in 2017, the port is mainly used for training flights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
