The airport was originally located 500 metres further west, in an area now used for services. This airport, named after Fausto Pesci, remained active until the 1970s, when Guglielmo Marconi opened it, as it became small and inadequate for the city’s needs.

In 1987, a Concorde F-BVFB from Paris landed in Bologna. The aircraft had been rented by a company from Modena for its employees. On 2 July 1990, both Air France and Lufthansa started daily flights to Paris and Frankfurt. In the following years the terminal was completed and both regular and charter flights increased.

In the summer of 2004, work to extend the airport’s runway extended the runway to 2.8 km. In July 2008, the low-cost airline Ryanair decided to transfer all its international flights from Forlì ‘Luigi Ridolfi’ airport to Bologna airport. Bologna Airport was recognised in the ACI Europe Best Airport Awards 2009 in the category of airports with a capacity of 1 to 5 million passengers. In light of the passenger growth recorded, the airport carried out renovation and expansion works in the Terminal with a total investment of € 26 million between 2011 and 2013. The surface area of the terminal was expanded by approximately 5,000 m². A single check-in area was created with 64 counters gathered on three islands and 3 passenger boarding piers were built. In addition, a new BHS baggage handling facility with a capacity of 2,500 baggage per hour and 10 million passengers per year was built. The area dedicated to commercial activities was increased from 29 to 35 shops.

In 2019, the new development plan was approved. In January 2020, the new 29000 m² de-icing apron was inaugurated, in January 2021 work was completed on a new cargo area consisting of a 15000 m² DHL logistics centre and an additional floor of the P-Express car park

Bologna travel guide

Bologna is a city in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy and is rich in historical, cultural and tourist attractions.

Among the main tourist attractions in the city; Piazza Maggiore, one of the most popular and most important squares of Bologna, Torre degli Asinelli, one of the most famous symbols of the city and the highest structure in the city, Basilica di San Petronio, one of the most important churches in the region and one of the largest basilicas in Italy, Piazza Santo Stefano, which is considered the most popular and favourite square by tourists and locals, and Archiginnasio, the main building of the University of Bologna and a building built in Renaissance style.

Transportation from Bologna Airport to the city centre

There are alternatives such as taxi, bus, train and car rental to reach the city centre from Guglielmo Marconi Airport, which is a medium-sized airport.

It is possible to reach every point of the country except the city centre by buses outside the port.
