History of Timi\u0219oara Traian Vuia Airport<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 1935, Romania’s first airport was built in Mo\u0219nita Veche, south-east of Timi\u015foara, not far from its current location. During the Second World War, this port was also used by the German Air Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1960, the first administrative building of the airport was built on its present site near the village of Ghiroda, followed in 1964 by the reception building for domestic flights. Between 1975 and 1980 the runway was extended from 2500 metres to 3500 metres and the International Terminal, control tower, VIP lounge and administration building were inaugurated. Between 1980 and 1990, air traffic started on domestic flights (to Bucharest and Constanta) and also on international flights (to Frankfurt am Main, New York and Chicago). A warehouse for air cargo was opened in 1998. In 2002, the departure hall for domestic flights was modernised. The airport has been named Traian Vuia since 2003. In 2004, the international terminal was modernised and expanded. In 2005, a feasibility study was carried out for the development of the airport between 2006 and 2015. Work on Terminal 1 for non-Schengen flights was completed in 2010. In 2012, the runway was renewed with asphalt and runway lighting.
