Liep\u0101ja International Airport is a regional airport certified to operate international flights. It is 7 km from the Latvian city center of Liep\u0101ja, 210 km from the capital Riga and 60 km from the Lithuanian border. History of Liep\u0101ja Airport<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first military airport in Liep\u0101ja was built in the Northern suburbs in 1926 and was used for the training of young pilots. In 1935, the Liep\u0101ja branch of the Latvian Aviation Club, together with the city of Liep\u0101ja and the Defense Aviation, established the Liep\u0101ja Civil Airport with a hangar, repair shops, an office and a commander’s room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the terms of the base agreement, a new Liep\u0101ja-Grobi\u0146a military aerodrome was established in 1940. During the Wehrmacht offensive on June 22, 1941, the German Luftwaffe bombed the Liep\u0101ja airfield. In 1960, the airport was handed over to civil aviation and Liep\u0101ja Airport operated 6 flights a day to Riga, the capital of Latvia, and other major cities of the USSR (Leningrad, Moscow, Kiev, Minsk, Kaliningrad, etc.), carrying an average of 100.000 passengers and 900 tons of cargo per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In August 2008, Liep\u0101ja International Airport was providing air connections to 4 cities and it was possible to fly from Liep\u0101ja to Riga, Copenhagen, Hamburg and Moscow. In 2008 airBaltic stopped its flights to Liep\u0101ja Airport due to the global financial crisis.
