Cengiz Topel Airport, located in the Kartepe district of Kocaeli, is in the category of civil and military airports. Cengiz Topel Airport was originally a Turkish Air Force facility. After the re-establishment of the aviation branch of the Naval Forces Command in 1968, the first naval helicopter pilots were trained by the flight school of the Turkish Land Forces Aviation Command at the G\u00fcvercinlik Ordu Air Base in Etimesgut, Ankara. The unit, which was formed at the same base in 1972, was transferred from Ankara to Cengiz Topel Air Base on May 19, 1973, due to its close location to Kocaeli G\u00f6lc\u00fck Naval Base within the scope of the protocol signed with the Turkish Air Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The base, which has been used jointly by the air and naval forces since 1973, was transferred to the Naval Forces Command on July 14, 1976, upon the instruction of the General Staff. Finally, on August 4, 1976, the Naval Air Base Command was established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The base was allocated to NATO on October 28, 1981. In 1983, the helipads in Istanbul and \u00c7anakkale were put into service so that the helicopters of the air station can also use it. In 2011, the airport was opened to public air traffic and Anadolujet operates domestic flights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
