Atat\u00fcrk Airport, or formerly Ye\u015filk\u00f6y Airport, is an international airport located on the European Side of Istanbul. Ye\u015filk\u00f6y Airport, which was put into service as Turkey’s first airport in the early 1900s and where the country’s first air transportation was started, was opened to international air traffic in 1953. Ye\u015filk\u00f6y Airport changed its name on July 29, 1985 and became Atat\u00fcrk Airport by taking the surname of the founder of the Turkish Republic, the great leader Mustafa Kemal Atat\u00fcrk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Atat\u00fcrk Airport is located within the borders of Bak\u0131rk\u00f6y, one of the largest districts of Istanbul, and Ye\u015filk\u00f6y, the center of which is by the sea. Its land is bordered by the Sea of Marmara in the south and the D-100 Highway in the north.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the reports made in 2015, it was the 11th busiest airport in the world and the first in Turkey regarding passenger traffic. The airport, which hosted an average of 1100 aircraft per day at that time, became one of the leading ports among Europe’s most important transit passenger airports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 4, 2016, the airport broke the all-time record with the landing and take-off of 1453 aircraft (an aircraft landing or taking off every 59.46 seconds). Atat\u00fcrk Airport, which hosted 61.332.124 passengers, 464.774 aircraft and 790.744 tons of cargo traffic in 2015, was the most active airport in the country at its time. The airport has been closed to scheduled flights as of April 7, 2019, and these flights have been transferred to Istanbul Airport. History of Istanbul Atat\u00fcrk Airport<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Like many airports, Atat\u00fcrk Airport was first established for military purposes in the early 1900s and served the military until 1933. After 1933, the airport was opened to civil flights, and in February 1933, the first protocol passengers made the Istanbul-Ankara flight. After Turkey signed the Chicago Civil Aviation Convention in 1944, the project of the new airport was prepared in 1947 and its foundation was laid in 1949. The project was completed in 1953 and the facilities were put into service on August 1st.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the advancement of technology around the world in the mid-60’s, wide-body aircraft began to be used, and the need for expansion and renovation at the airport emerged. The construction of the runway planned for wide-body aircraft began in 1968, and after various delays, the runway was put into service on November 12, 1972. Due to the increasing traffic and the location of the Airport, the terminal buildings had to be renewed and it took until 1983 for the new buildings to be put into service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cargo terminal was put into service in 1993, and Terminal C was put into service in 1995 to meet the increased luggage trade and charter passenger traffic after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Due to the increasing traffic in the 2000s, many expansion works were carried out throughout the airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Atat\u00fcrk Airport is used only for private jet charter services and cargo flights, with a decision taken on April 7, 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
