Tokat Airport history

Attempts to build Tokat Airport date back to 1976. Former Minister of Transportation Nahit Menteşe took initiatives on August 2, 1976 and was able to obtain approval for the establishment of an airport in the region. As a result of the 1977 parliamentary elections and government changes (June 1977, January 1978, November 1979), followed by the 1980 Military Coup, the airport was deprived of its ability to become operational.

Until 1987, no attempt was made for the construction of a port. In 1987, with the initiatives of Governor Recep Yazıcıoğlu, the issue came to the agenda again, but no results were obtained. At the beginning of 1992, Tokat Airport could not be completed, could not be put into operation due to actual, legal and financial reasons and was guarded by a worker assigned by the special administration. The port was put into service incompletely only in 1995 as a result of the works carried out. Due to the deficiencies in the port and its location, the port was closed again in 2017 and it was decided to change its location.
